James Roberts reports:
Lichfield Central League team put up a valiant display at last Winter League Champions, Sprintz of Darlaston, but were defeated by 3 matches to 2 (18 – 7). However, this represents a massive improvement on the 5-0 drubbing we suffered there last time around, so bodes well for the season ahead.
Playing on very cold courts with no heating on a chilly bonfire night, and with single dot balls to compensate, Alan Evans got us underway in the no. 3 string match, up against the young and talented Tyler. Despite taking the first game, Alan eventually succumbed to Tyler’s consistent shot making 3-1.
Starting just after Alan, but ending well after, John Jacques played out a marathon 5 setter against Ash, this lasting at least 1 hour and going to a tie break in the 5th, despite Ash’s 4 match balls which John saved. John took the tie break at the first time of asking 10/8.
John Sanders then took on Sean in the no. 1 game, pushing him all the way but succumbing to Sean’s consistent racket skills 3-0.
Nick Hill then had a tough ask at no. 2 playing the hard hitting Neil. Nick struggled to get the measure of the cold courts with the single dot ball, so quickly found himself 2 down. He managed to take the third to a tie break and even had a game ball, but Neil took that and the match 3-0.
James Roberts found himself in the unfamiliar position of playing last in the 5th string match, this due to his opponent Tim having marked the marathon Ash v John match. He had played Tim before in the Winter League, letting go of a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2, so when he went 2-0 up again, got another attack of the jitters, losing the next 2 games. However, he managed to regain some self-composure, and took the decider 9/7.
Not an overall team win, but some welcome points on the board. We are now looking forward to our next match away at Bilston and hopefully can this time notch a win to really kick start our season.
